Healthy Breakfast Ideas to Start the Day Right

by Darrin on June 14, 2010

healthy breakfast ideasEven though breakfast is touted as the most important meal of the day, most people make it the UNHEALTHIEST meal of the day due to what they eat.

A rushed weekday breakfast usually consists of a few bowls of sugary refined-grain cereal that will cause insulin resistance and fat accumulation long-term, and the usual weekend fare of orange juice, pancakes, and syrup will do the same.

If you are a person who is hungry in the morning it is important you to set the day right. Here are some healthy breakfast ideas to get you going.

Eat Leftovers to Save Time

I know, I know. It may sound like a cop-out, but eating yesterday’s leftovers for breakfast is one of the smartest things you can do, especially if you are following my advice and eating lots of unprocessed meats and veggies.

Let’s face it, trying to cook up a good breakfast in the morning while you scramble to get off to work on time is not in the cards for most of us. So don’t beat yourself up if you’re not getting a fresh-out-of-the-oven meal every morning. Utilize good time management by just heating up some of yesterday’s roast chicken or grilled salmon.

Get More Protein

There’s something to be said for breakfast setting the stage for the rest of the day. People who eat a healthy meal in the morning are much more likely to keep it going than if they eat a bunch of sugar-laden food, setting themselves up to want more and more glucose as they constantly crash throughout the day.

Protein has been found to be more satiating than either fat or carbohydrates, so make sure you get some quality meat or eggs to start off the day on a good foot.

I eat eggs almost every day, and as I have pointed out earlier, you gain an immense amount of leverage on your time if you cook a big batch of food at once. My idea? Once or twice a week, cook up a dozen eggs at once and keep in containers ready to eat. Hard boil ‘em or scramble up with a bunch of butter and some herbs such as chives and you are ready to go.

The Weekend Breakfast

Alright, you’ve been busting your ass off for 5 or more days straight and you finally get to sleep in. What better way to celebrate by having a lazy morning and a deluxe breakfast?

First, get some good bacon or sausage to fry up. Think about all the poor saps who are still afraid of fat and cholesterol and chuckle with your knowledge that they are both good for you.

Might as well throw some fruit in the mix as well. Go with what’s in season: grapefruit and pears during the summer, berries during the summer.

Omelettes aren’t as difficult as you think either. Melt a couple tablespoons of butter, lard, or coconut oil in a small saucepan while you beat up three eggs. Get the pan nice and hot without burning the butter. Pour the eggs in and as they start to set, lift it up off the bottom and push it back, letting the raw eggs flow onto the pan. Take it off when they are still slightly moist. (They will continue to cook for a couple minutes after you take them off.) Throw onions, garlic, cheese, bacon, or whatever else you want into the omelette, fold it in half, and plop onto a plate. It’s that simple.

While breakfast isn’t the be-all-end-all that’s it’s purported to be, you can easily make a solid one without loading up on sugar and processed foods with these healthy breakfast ideas. Leave it till the weekend if you want to go all out. It’s nice for if you are having friends over or are trying to further impress the girl who spent the night with you. (Hey, I’m not judging!)

Breakfast is important to me because if I screw up there, then the rest of the day is F’ed! Good tips.

I’m not really a morning eater any more – my first meal is usually around noon or 1pm, but some days I wake up starving so I always keep eggs on hand. Usually I’ll whip up a egg and cheese omelet with some veggies, cooked in coconut oil and topped with a little salsa or sliced avocado if I have it on hand.

That’s great that you use coconut oil too – I love the stuff! Great flavor and so good for ya. And while I love my cocoa krispies on my carb refeed days, I’m going more Paleo for the Summer so they’ll be put on hold awhile 🙂

@Tony:
Yeah, if I started the day off with Lucky Charms I know it would all be downhill for me that day, too!

@Craig:
I am not a big breakfast fan either. During the week I’m just too busy and to be honest, I’m not hungry in the morning. A cup of coffee and I’m off. I am, however, a big fan of weekend breakfasts: omelettes, yogurt and berries, bacon… Yum! And coconut oil has changed my life for the better too.

I would never say “you must eat breakfast because it’s the most important meal of the day,” but I know some people are hungry every morning and those people should eat breakfast, no sense in torturing yourself, ha.

Once I quit eating a high-carb breakfast, it did wonders for my body fat percentage. During the week, I eat a veggie omlet with cheese and an apple before work which keeps me full for a few hours. On the weekends, I typically don’t eat until the afternoon, usually because I’m sleeping in and doing ESE.

I hate breakfast and never eat it. I usually hit the gym about 3 hours after I wake up, and have my first meal about 2 hours after I get done working out. I still eat the foods you mention here, though. I eat lots of eggs, and some kind of meat, which lately has been pork tenderloin and top sirloin.

@Alykhan:
I’m not a big low-carb guy, but I will admit that reducing ’em first thing in the morning is a good idea. Seems like as soon as you get on the “blood glucose roller coaster,” you’re stuck there for the rest of the day, accumulating fat as a result.

@Drew:
It took me a while to kick breakfast. I was a big “six meals a day” dude for years. Now I’m down to 2 or 3 and feel no need to eat first thing in the morning like I used to, so I’m in the same boat as you. But everyone’s different and I definitely think people who are hungry in the AM should get a solid breakfast in.

@Yavor:
Thanks, buddy! Hope my “American-isms” aren’t confusing you TOO much, haha. Cook up a storm, but just remember… keep it simple!

Darrin,
I’m like you in that most days during the week, I run out the door without eating. However, having a later breakfast on the weekend is great. Some good suggestions here.

I need my breakfast usually before 9am I’m already had 3 feeds! eg
But I what I love I don’t put on weight because its the right foods as you described

Darrin June 20, 2010 at 9:31 am

@Raymond:
Hey, whatever works for you. In our society, we tend to believe that when we are hungry, tired, etc, that this is a BAD thing. According to the health authorities, this leads to overeating and underexercising. Nonsense. You gotta listen to what your body’s telling you. As long as you are eating well when you are hungry, you are doing the right thing!

@Dave:
I am becoming more and more a fan of the “lazy Sunday” approach to breakfast. I figure, I don’t eat breakfast during the week, I gotta make sure I go all out on the weekends. 🙂

I agree, protein in the morning is key!
