A Wooden Spoon<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.55.47.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3257\" alt=\"Wooden Spoon\" src=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.55.47-e1386308268717.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The wooden spoon is the most essential tool in your kitchen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For all your stirring needs and for all types of cookware, it\u2019s the standard against which all others are judged.<\/p>\n<p>It is firm enough to scrape up any bits of caramelized food off the bottom of your <a href=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/30\/the-most-important-pot-in-your-kitchen-and-5-reasons-why-you-need-to-upgrade\/\">enameled cast-iron Dutch oven<\/a>, but soft enough to use on your aluminum stockpot without leaving a single scratch.<\/p>\n<p>It is also heat-resistant, so you\u2019ll never have to worry about melting it or burning yourself. Just leave it in the pan and you\u2019ll be on your merry way.<\/p>\n<p>Although you really only need one round wooden spoon, they tend to come in sets. Having a few around might prove handy, particularly if you have a flat one too.<\/p>\n<p>I use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Oceanstar-Bamboo-Cooking-Utensil-6-Piece\/dp\/B009BLGR2Y\/?tag=thgucaco-20\">this set<\/a> and it gives a great bang for the buck.<\/p>\n<h2>2. It\u2019s like peanut butter and jelly.<\/p>\n<p>First off, since you don\u2019t need to worry about scraping off the coating of cast iron, you won\u2019t need to use wimpy plastic.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, you actually <em>want<\/em> to have your spatula made of sturdy metal, since this will help you to keep a slick, flat surface on your pan.<\/p>\n<p>Throw in rounded edges to prevent scraping, and you get <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Dexter-Russell--2-5-Inch-Stainless-Walnut-Pancake\/dp\/B002CJNBTO\/?tag=thgucaco-20\">this spatula<\/a>, which I use nearly every day.<\/p>\n<h2>3. A Pair of Tongs<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.55.15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3256\" alt=\"Tongs\" src=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.55.15-e1386308410933.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I admit, I went without a pair of tongs for the longest time in my kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>After all, I got along just fine without a pair, so why complicate things?<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, tongs make many kitchen tasks far easier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They\u2019re the ideal choice for easily flipping steaks and other meats. They work great for tossing salads with dressing. And they can be used to grab stuff high on shelves for those of us who are, er, vertically challenged!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/OXO-Grips-12-Inch-Stainless-Steel-Locking\/dp\/B00004OCK1\/?tag=thgucaco-20\">These tongs<\/a> are the best I\u2019ve ever used, and I highly recommend them.<\/p>\n<h2>4. A Silicone Spatula<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.56.36.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3258\" alt=\"Silicone Spatula\" src=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.56.36-e1386308606264.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most modern kitchens go too far when it comes to rubber utensils.<\/p>\n<p>With the widespread use of nonstick-coated cookware, it is understandable that a market for these flimsy utensils has thrived.<\/p>\n<p>But as we mentioned above, a metal spatula is crucial if you are using a cast iron skillet, and a wooden spoon is second-to-none for stirring soups and stews in your Dutch oven.<\/p>\n<p>So why get a rubber spatula?<\/p>\n<p><strong>For making sauces, cooking eggs, and just about anything else in your <a href=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/19\/the-unsung-hero-of-kitchen-cookware\/\">saucepan<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are still times when you\u2019ll want something that is as heat-resistant as a wooden spoon, but enough flexibility to scoop all around the pot to prevent burning.<\/p>\n<p>For these times, you\u2019ll be happy to have a silicone spatula around, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/GIR-Spatula-Red\/dp\/B00BJT61FE\/?tag=thgucaco-20\">this one<\/a> is definitely the best on the market.<\/p>\n<h2>5. A Ladle<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.54.50.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3255\" alt=\"Wok Ladle\" src=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.54.50-e1386308716944.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>When you cook up a big pot of soup, you\u2019ll need something to get it into bowls that won\u2019t drive you crazy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ladles are essential for scooping out large portions of stews and soups at once, so you don\u2019t have to dig in there with a cup or try to scoop it out with a small spoon (and make a mess everywhere).<\/p>\n<p>I think wok ladles are easier to use and store than the traditional models, and they often come packaged with a wok spatula (like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Stainless-Hand-Tooled-Chuan-Spatula-Ladle\/dp\/B005C8DCMI\/?tag=thgucaco-20\">this one<\/a>, which is what I use).<\/p>\n<h2>6. A Spider Skimmer<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.54.23.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3254\" alt=\"Spider Skimmer\" src=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.54.23-e1386308770919.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like a ladle, a slotted spoon is an important tool to have on hand for fishing cooked food out of hot liquid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This can be boiled greens or potatoes, or for getting your veggies out of a braise that you are about to reduce down.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A plain ol\u2019 slotted spoon (think a wooden spoon with a few holes in it) is the typical tool we use in the west, but I\u2019d suggest you get yourself a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Joyce-Chen-30-0037-Stainless-Strainer\/dp\/B0000CF4LF\/?tag=thgucaco-20\">spider skimmer<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n<p>These bad boys have larger bowls and more holes\u2013which in plain English means you can get your food out of the liquid faster.<\/p>\n<p>They were originally made for deep-frying in a wok, but they are far more utilitarian than you\u2019d otherwise think.<\/p>\n<h2>6. A Peeler<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.57.50.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3260\" alt=\"Peeler\" src=\"http:\/\/theguycancook.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/2013-12-05-19.57.50-e1386308819755.jpg\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;ve said before that a big ass knife is all you need for most of the cutting tasks you need to do in the kitchen save one&#8211;peeling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While some might argue for using a smaller paring knife for these types of situations, I&#8217;d argue that a peeler is better. It&#8217;s cheaper, and it does a better job.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one of those fortunate instances where the best tool on the market is also one of the cheapest, so I&#8217;d suggest you pick up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Kuhn-Rikon-Original-Peeler-Yellow\/dp\/B001BCFTWU\/?tag=thgucaco-20\" target=\"_blank\">the same peeler I use<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The Minimalist Kitchen<\/h2>\n<p>One of the most common reasons people have for not cooking is thinking they don\u2019t have the right equipment.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Even the most basic of post-college kitchens will have most of the items on this list, and filling it out won\u2019t take much money (and will pay for itself quickly if you use it to make yourself a few dinners rather than eating out).<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s easy to get \u201ckitchen lust\u201d and think you need to outfit your kitchen with state-of-the-art gear, but focus on the essentials first and learn how to cook a few good meals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The fancy stuff can wait.<\/p>\n<span id=\"pty_trigger\"><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Setting up your kitchen can be a daunting task.
